Leather Crupper

"This classic piece of driving /riding equipment is designed to stablize a saddle, or harness a driving horse or pony.

It is particularly useful for a saddle horse whose round belly and girth areas make them prone to slip their saddle and/or harness from side to side while traveling/working!

Custom western saddles that have a Crupper "D" ring set on a leather tab between the rear jockeys can accommodate this useful tool. I like to use it on all the colt's I start for the initial 30-50 rides, so that when, not if, a lead rope from a horse than I am ponying alongside, or my own or someone else's riata gets underneath my saddle horse's tail sometime, he will raise the tail and let gravity take it down fom there. Otherwise, it is customary to experience a fairly fast and potentially wild ride -- this sort of chaos can lead to a wreck in short order, and is something most people would wish to avoid.

Most English saddles will accommodate a hard rubber or leather "tab" that slides easily down between the panels of most English saddles, and "lock" into position under the cantle. The crupper attaches easily to this and keeps saddles in place very well on the roly-poly ones."
